Koyaanisqatsi II -- A Road Trip
page 9

A combination of bad vibes from the town, too much heat and too much driving, too much togetherness, and what was becoming Lucy's regularly scheduled Late Afternoon Wind-Up caused all of the three weary travellers to get snappy to each other in the store.

Warrior Kachina
One of these days I'm going to cut you into leetle pieces!

Deep inside, Geronimo is tearing me apart

Shout, shout, let it all out
These are the things I can do without

People are people, so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully

So I light another cigarette and try to remember to forget

Warrior God Kachina

We dealt with it and kept heading east to our destination -- Holbrook KOA Kampground. We arrived near dusk, like everyone else. Waiting in line to check in we saw a little bit of a costumed Indian lad dancing but we had to set up the tent before dark so we couldn't stay to watch all of it. Our campsite was out at the end of the grounds, against the fence. The RVs had the choice locations. The wind picked up while we were making camp so much that we could barely hold the tent and almost went hang-gliding over the fence. Once we set it up the bows on one side were curving so much that it was no longer a dome shape but more of a crescent moon. We staked everything down good (which was hard considering there was only a 3" layer of dirt over the concrete) and tied the tent straps to our picnic table.

Spotted Corn KachinaWe couldn't use the propane stove in the wind to cook any of the food we'd argued over in the store so we just made sandwiches. The peanut butter had melted in the trunk, but we poured it out and ate PB&J and tortilla chips. Around 7:30 the wind died down and Lucy went off to make some friends in the playground. We sat outside among the anthills for a little while and then went to bed under the floodlights. Jason was becoming well adapted to his new pillow made of a towel-stuffed t-shirt. His own pillow had been left behind in Vegas. Even as we were falling asleep, we could hear people still giggling in their RVs who had been watching us attempt to set up our tent in the gale.

Ash Fork to Sedona to Winslow to Holbrook

This day saw things get bad and things get better · a trained attack tumbleweed · nowhere all around us · no caverns (we passed them by mistake) · more melted ice · a video for sale about Meteor Crater at the KOA shop (in case we want to see it again and again · extra-charge cable tv hookups for RVs and still more video rental opportunities for those who wish they'd never left home · a lot of miles with a lot of stops · grubbiness and grouchiness and grins

Easy, take it easy
Don't let the sound of
your own wheels
drive you crazy
