Koyaanisqatsi II -- A Road Trip
page 7

Day 5
Jason cooked up a fine camp breakfast, then we came up with a completely new way to pack the car -- this was the first time we had all the camping gear out. We continued east on Highway 40 then turned south through Oak Creek Canyon. The pictures out our windows shifted suddenly from desert scrub to massive rock walls (which we were going down into); then we came to a cool, relaxed tree-lined winding road through the canyon. There were loads of cars and we realized this was probably the only shady area in Arizona. We came out of the trees and our first glimpse of red rock monolith formations. We came into Sedona, which we'd heard was a must-see kind of place. We went into a dozen gift shops pricing jewelry, kachinas and knickknacks. They had some beautiful items but all were way too expensive. We decided Sedona had become an over-priced tourist spot and hoped to find better prices later. We ate pizza for lunch in a Mexican-tiled open air cafe, then travelled down the road to the Chapel of the Holy Cross, which was built right into the rocks. It was high on the mountain and looked out over a huge valley with the red rock formations framing the view on both sides. We were held up in the parking lot for ½ hour because a tour bus couldn't turn around. The police showed up and the bus finally made its way down the hill. We headed across to Highway 17 (the undamaged section) and passed through a light thunderstorm, then back to Highway 40 and east again. We had finally arrived in Indian country and mystic landscapes. Jason began to "kwa".

Purple haze all in my brain
Lately things they don't seem the same
Acting funny, but I don't know why
'Scuse me while I kiss the sky

So I think I'll take a look out of the window
