Koyaanisqatsi II -- A Road Trip

Day 4 (is that all??)
Up and finally out of Circus Circus. We should have remembered our bad experience at C.C. in Reno and considered it a bad omen. We went to the new, huge, glitzy Excalibur casino. It was totally impressive -- they carried the medieval themes throughout the whole place, and had a nice non-gambling dining and shopping mezzanine with strolling minstrels and magician shows. Too bad we were burnt out on Vegas and didn't stay longer. We all made a good haul the gift shop before we left.
Leave it!

sun kachinaWe travelled on through the blank desert on a hot, hot drive to Hoover Dam. There was road work along the way (to become a recurring theme) so we had to stop in the heat for 20 minutes so just out of sight of the dam. When we finally made it down the hill and over the top of the dam we had to park quite a ways away and walk back to it. We peeked over the side and it was pretty impressive, but it was just too hot to stand in line to tour it. It was too hot even to walk across it to the other end to the restrooms. Lucy began to feel sick from the heat. It had to be 115°. We bought a soda that we polished off in about 5 minutes, and even then it was lukewarm after seconds.

Las Vegas to Ash Fork Ash Fork KOA

We drove on to Ash Fork for our first night of camping. We set up the tent just before dusk. It was a nice campground (for KOA) but we didn't have much time to enjoy it. We learned how to and how not to light a Coleman lamp. We went to bed early.

We hit the blue fields, in the blue sedan we couldn't get much farther

into the desert

This day we saw lightning at night again · stunning scenery the distance · big wind · Winnebagos and all kinds of camper contraptions · another stateline · a Jesus impersonator carrying his cross across the desert, miles from nowhere · tumbleweeds · lots of sites to do car commercials · our first authentic Indian gift shop (well, it was the KOA shop but it seemed like authentic stuff... we waited to buy ours) · Stars · world-class tremendous cloud-shows · a new time zone but Arizona doesn't believe in Daylight Savings so it didn't affect us · our first views of Forever.
