We are entranced, spellbound

We still had tapes we hadn't played, and quite a few that we both agreed could be repeated. All through the trip we had alternated tapes: one of Jason's then one of Barbara's, and of course we each had music that the other might not want to hear. But we were amazed at the number of duplicated songs and bands we had with us. The overall most requested list was topped by Pink Floyd, Yes, and Tears for Fears, with a lot of helpings of Bowie, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie and Adam & the Ants. We weren't really too surprised to find we had a lot of identical multi-song sequences, but we were amazed to hear how much music had subtle Indian undertones that we only picked upon because we were there, and how many times the music playing would be perfect for our states of mind or for where we were at the time. This was a clear-cut Tears for Fears kind of night, and we could deal with that.

I wanted to be with you alone, and talk about the weather...
Something happens and I'm head over heels
I never find out 'til I'm head over heels

I'm digging those good vibrations

Little Princess Yak-Yak was sleeping as peacefully as could be, completely unaware of the speed and grace of our flight through the Utah night. Big Chief Kwa-Kwa and Road Warrior kept up with the vibes as they left Indian Country and came into some pine forest clean mountain air and greeted some deer who seemed to be out for an evening walk but after passing 4 or 5 that were completely motionless -- even if we stopped the car and backed up to see them closer -- we decided they might be statues put out by the rangers.

The few towns on the map passed by us largely unnoticed. One time we saw a light so we knew someone else was alive. Another car passed by going south. One exit had a sign that read "Gas Next Right. No Telephone". We weren't expecting Utah to be Donny & Marie posters on every corner, or Mormon men roaming the countryside with a dozen Mormon wives trailing after them, but we weren't expecting such serenity either.

...making life make sense.

It seemed like days had gone by since we'd left Grand Canyon, but it had only been that morning. We'd travelled through large chunks of two states and covered 1,000 years of Indian life, eons of Earth's history, many miles of roads and just as many miles of cassette tape. It had been possibly the best over-all day of the trip but it was time to put an end to it and find a place to sleep. Hanksville sounded like the kind of place that might have a motel room available, and when we got there we saw the Store-in-a-Rock on our right. The oddity of that set in at the same time we realized that Hanksville was over. Rather than turn around and seek out a motel that probably wasn't even there (and if it was, it was probably inside a hill or something) we pushed onward. We came into a real town -- probably Torrey -- that had a few houses and even a motel. But Torrey seemed like it could be the setting of a horror film, and the motel looked like Norman Bates' dream come true, so we kept going and came into Bicknell. It had 2 motels that looked pretty decent and both had AAA-recommended signs, so we pulled in. There was one lone car that passed by us 5 or 6 times while we were checking in. There were 2 teenage kids inside; probably we were the most excitement they'd seen that night. We got into our room which was cozy and clean and dropped directly to sleep, although I think we all were wearing a little glow.

After seeing all your sense of fear diminish
As you treat danger a pure collection
As you throw away misconceptions
Going for the one, going for the one
Going for a listen in time
    taken so high
    to touch to move
    listen to life
    touching touch time
    travel twilight
    taken so high
Roundabout, sounding out, love you so
love you so, love you so
Now the verses I've sang
Don't add much weight to the story in my head
So I'm thinking I should go and write a punch line
But they're so hard to find in my cosmic mind
So I think I'll take a look out of the window...
Moments decide, moments delight
Moments in flight, talk about sending love
