Koyaanisqatsi II -- A Road Trip
page 10

After three days in the desert, my skin began to turn brown
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There were sand and hills and rain
I've been through the desert on a horse with no name

Giant steps are what we take walking on the moon

When I look out of my window so many sights to see

Day 6 started out with more free KOA morning Koffee and fairly clean showers and lots of exchanging of travel tales with other KOA Kampers. Lucy had a moment of panic in the shower -- some sort of problem regarding wet clothes, shower hats falling off, and wearing the wrong sandals into the shower, but she came out of it unscathed. Jason cooked up another fine breakfast and we left our Kampsite safely in the hands of the ants.

We went down the road to the Petrified Forest entrance and had our first views of the Painted Desert. We followed the road along, stopping at each of the outlooks and points of interest to see prehistoric Indian graffiti, elephant-toe rocks, miniature cave dwellings and elf city scenes, a few really colorful bits of petrified wood, fossils, and nothing even closely resembling a forest. We walked a ¾ mile trail through ancient and changing land, rock and water formations. We saw a mountain resembling a dragon throwing up.

Petrified Forest loopEntering the loop drive we had between an eighth and a quarter tank of gas, which would have been fine except for the slow driving, the air conditioner running, and all the stops and starts. The gas station at the other end of the park was closed, so we ran on fumes back into Holbrook and gassed up just in time.

We picked a Mexican restaurant for lunch. When we walked in all 4 of the customers (none of whom had any teeth) turned and stared at us as if we'd just interrupted something. We were seated in a separate room and then the waitress kept directing us towards other restaurants who could provide us with chicken dishes, water, etc. We definitely had the feeling that we weren't wanted in there so went to a neighboring cafe and ate big platters of tacos, tostadas, fajitas and rice. We realized we'd been lucky to get out of the other place before the aliens came along and took our teeth out and turned us into zombies also.
