free Todd ticketsIt all began as a sort of fever-dream after seeing Tears for Fears in May. Jason and Barbara decided that a vacation trip to Arizona would be just the thing they both needed to do. Lucy had no say in the matter but went along with the idea anyway.

Unlike most great late-night ideas, this one actually came to be. Thanks to KFOG's "My Three Songs" and songs about girls named Mary or Marian, the great adventure began on July 6 with a trip to the Palace of Fine Arts to see Todd Rundgren recording a new album. It was either a totally brilliant idea for Todd to record a whole album completely live -- no hours of overlaying tracks, scheduling different musicians at different times, getting money from ticket sales instead of just laying it out for studio time; or it was an incredibly stupid idea because of all the post-recording production and overdubbing that will be needed. Time will tell. Maybe Todd never stopped to wonder why "live" recording was ever abandoned in favor of track-by-track recording. At any rate, we predict Todd's next big hit will be Scientist of Love.

head south down I-5We left half-way through because we'd both been to recording sessions and didn't find much interest in hearing a song over and over and over, and we were anxious to get going. We went back to Oakland and collected Lucy and loaded up the car. During the following days we never were quite able to get it repacked as neatly and efficiently as we did that night.

We left on Friday night about 10:00 for the Great Southwest. The fairly familiar trip down Highway 5 went quickly thanks to good music (playing for the lst time) and lots of stops for snacks and drinks. Most of the initial ground rules for in-the-car behavior were discarded within the first 2 hours of the trip.

Lucy slept in the back seat as we headed towards Bakersfield in the night.

I want to be a scientist of love
